The galaxy is no longer fully painted in. You find systems. You keep a Captain's Log. Nebulae cut how far scanners see.

System discovery

Planets are not visible until their system has been discovered.

Stars still show. You discover a system when you reach it.

Using a Solis or Courier to survey the planet lets you know its traits and surface before you commit to colonizing it.

Ships and fleets keep a Captain's Log in the ship drawer. It records the work the ship has done.

Scanners can penetrate nebulae. Once the radar reaches the cloud its range falls off rapidly. You can hide in nebulae.
